Introduction to webisodes

Today I watched a selection of web-based miniseries. The ones I looked at included Living with the infedels, Chad Vader, The Guild and We Need Girlfriends. These episodes are usually around 5 minutes long and have an ongoing storyline like a normal TV series. They are usually comedy, and about a small group of people that you get to know throughout the series. They are usually set in very basic, local locations such as apartments or shops, and don't tend to mess around with explanations, and just go straight into the show. As the show is online, the storylines are usually based around nerdier more niche areas of interest, such as gaming or pop culture.

The characters are usually heavily stereotyped rely on very basic forms of comedy. You are rarely introduced to any characters, and are meant to pick up what you can about them as you go along, so the more attention you pay the more you relate to characters, as they are short for time and can't use it on explanations and introductions. One of the ones we watched Chad Vader, was quite self-explanatory, if was playing on the audiences knowledge of Star Wars, but portraying a different member of the 'Vader' family. For some reason they decided everyone in the family dresses the same, however had he been in normal clothes nobody would understand what was going on, so it adds to the comedy to see the mega bad guy from a huge hollywood blockbuster working in a dead-end job at a supermarket.

Another I watched, however took a different approach.
Living with the Infidels took a more controversial approach to the series, and was about a group of would-be terrorists trying to live normal lives. This relies more on shock humour, as it is quite a grey area of humour. Each episode seemed to stick to a certain structure. Each episode follows on from the last in some way, and each episode has at least one thing that could make you watch the next. They aren't quite cliffhangers, but they make you sort of interested to see what will happen next. This could be like in Chad Vader, when at the end he asks some girl out on a date, so you might want to watch and see how that will play out, as from the episode and prior knowledge you can guess it isn't going to go smoothly, or in Living with the Infidels, where you are introduced to the new neighbour and want to know how the characters will react and get along with them.

Scrubs, a popular show on TV has it's own spin-off webisode series called Srubs: Interns. However in this one, the first episode introduces the characters individually. Honestly i can't stand any of them, and i wouldn't want to watch any more bcause the characters all annoy me. When a new character is introduced, they are given a freeze frame while the main character explains who they are. I don't like this show, because they seem to have just taken the idea of scrubs and changed the characters to be more annoying. It appears to be mainly handheld footage and is about some new interns starting work at the hospital.
